Sugarcane bagasse valorization to xylitol: Techno?economic and life cycle assessment
نویسندگان
چکیده
A detailed techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment (LCA) of a novel bio-refinery that produces xylitol from sugarcane bagasse are provided. The proposed process includes dilute acid pretreatment in pressurized conditions followed by fermentation (upstream section). broth is then sent for separation purification to the downstream section. Calculations performed plant with 4 t/h dry throughput. With yield 0.54 g per xylose, produced 437.4 kg/h xylitol. Upstream data adapted experimental studies, while ASPEN PLUS® flowsheet simulation used obtain production facility assumed be annexed an existing sugar mill India. total utility requirement reduced using heat integration strategies. Cradle-to-gate scope considered LCA 1 kg taken as functional unit. product cost calculated 230 INR/kg (US$3.17/kg). For year payback period, selling price must 450 (US$6.2/kg). sections major components cost. results show greenhouse gas emissions 2.759 CO2 eq. electricity within identified source emissions, reduction duration key factor. identify opportunities improve economic well environmental standpoint. © 2022 Society Chemical Industry John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Use of immobilized Candida cells on xylitol production from sugarcane bagasse.
In this study we used the yeast Candida guilliermondii FTI 20037 immobilized by entrapment in Ca-alginate beads (2.5-3 mm diameter) for xylitol production from concentrated sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysate in a repeated batch system. The fermentation runs were carried out in 125- and 250-ml Erlenmeyer flasks placed in an orbital shaker at 30 degrees C and 200 rpm during 72 h, keepin...

Xylose-to-xylitol bioconversion by Ca-alginate entrapped Candida guilliermondii cells in sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysate was carried out in erlenmeyer flasks using the repeated-batch mode of fermentation. The hydrolysate was supplemented or not with ammonium sulfate and/or rice bran extract at the beginning of each repeated batch. Altogether, six sets of three repeated-batches were...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Activated Charcoals and Adsorption Conditions Used in the Treatment of Sugarcane Bagasse Hydrolysate for Xylitol Production
Xylitol has sweetening, anticariogenic and clinical properties that have attracted the attention of the food and pharmaceutical industries. The conversion of sugars from lignocellulosic biomass into xylitol by D-xylose-fermenting yeast represents an alternative to the chemical process for producing this polyol. A good source of D-xylose is sugarcane bagasse, which can be hydrolyzed with dilute ...
متن کاملProspects of Cellulosic Ethanol from Sugarcane Bagasse
AGRICULTURAL residues such as grain straws and corn stover are abundant, readily available biomass feedstocks for the production of next generation biofuels, with collection and transport costs being a major component of their cost. Sugarcane bagasse is thus an especially attractive biomass feedstock in that it is an agricultural residue already present in large quantities at sugar and ethanol ...
متن کاملFast Pyrolysis Characteristics of Sugarcane Bagasse Hemicellulose
The pyrolysis characteristics of sugarcane bagasse hemicellulose were investigated using a tubular furnace. The total gas yield and the releasing behavior of the main gas products were measured by GC analysis. The liquid products were analyzed by GC-MS and ion chromatography. The chars were investigated by elemental analysis and proximate analysis. The volatile remaining in the char extracted b...
